The Urushi Kijiro series is designed by the master blacksmith Shogou Yamatsuka made of stainless Ginsan. The knife is generally light and comes very thinly ground. The Shinogi line is very clean and concise and the knife is generally a little higher than comparable models. The knife was ground by Tadataka Maruyama, a professional sharpener from Sakai.
The handle is painted reddish Urushi. Urushi is the name for a natural lacquer made from resin from the sumac tree and represents a very old and very traditional lacquer technique.
