knife handles
The "Wa" grip
The Wa handle is the traditional handle of Japanese knives and is characterized by its lightness compared to European handles. It is made from a variety of wood types and usually gives the knives a balance aligned with the blade, which ensures a slight forward tilt.
The Wa handle is easy to care for: all you need to do is treat it occasionally with mineral oil or a special wood care product to keep the surface smooth and durable. Since the blade is glued to the handle, it can easily be replaced or customized to suit personal preferences.
The European knife handle
The European knife handle is much more common in our latitudes than the traditional Wa handle. It is characterized by a higher weight and is usually made of robust, layered materials such as pakka wood or plastic. These materials are not only durable, but also resistant to moisture and temperature fluctuations.
The handle is firmly riveted to the blade, creating an extremely strong and durable connection. European knives are usually center balanced, making them particularly suitable for users who prefer a balanced weight and a solid feel. These characteristics make the European knife handle ideal for use in professional kitchens as well as for home cooks who value a slightly heavier tool that is comfortable to hold.
